At this point you can be sure any team left standing is a very good football team. The next opponent for the Hawks is Timberland. Strom Thurmond received the opening kick off and reeled off a series of long runs to quickly move the ball to the Myrtle Beach 25. Coach Early called a time out and I don't know if he reminded the Seahawks of things they had seen in films, pointed out what assignments were being missed, or threatened the lives of the defensive unit, but the Hawks stiffened and held for three consecutive plays forcing the Rebels to settle for a 36 yard field goal.

On offence the Hawks were ineffective, going three and out on their first three possessions. We saw more of the old throw the ball sideways or backwards, some new plays that were ill conceived, and running east-west. Against competition that only gets tougher each week the offensive coordinators need to learn how to step it up. We can't wait until the second quarter to start playing football if we want a chance to visit Williams Brice Stadium this year. The Hawks need to learn to come out swinging with their best punches, not shadow boxing with themselves.

The Rebels however kept up a relentless ground game that resulted in another field goal and a missed field goal in the same span. You do have to like the way the defense stiffened when the Rebels reached the red zone. Strom Thurmond led 6-0 before the Hawks managed their first first down. Another Seahawk punt then resulted in another missed field goal try from 46 yards.

When the Seahawks finally began to move North-South they were very effective and early in the second quarter Drew Ellis connected with Damien Singleton deep down the sideline, resulting in a 40 yard TD and a Seahawk lead that they never relinquished. Spencer Benton added the PAT and the Hawks led 7-0 at the half.

The second half saw the Hawks first drive stall around the 40. But the defense was ready to play and stopped the Rebels. Myrtle Beach then marched down the field and quickly scored to make it 14-0 on a plunge over the line by Evan Rose.

On the next Myrtle Beach possession the Hawks drove efficiently down the field, but with first and goal on the seven, and a chance to put the game away the coaches opted not to use the power running of Evan Rose and company, instead choosing a finesse pass to the back of the end zone that was intercepted.

But just when the Rebels felt they might have new life and a chance, Evan Rose stepped in to intercept a Hillary pass and return the ball 24 yards to make the score 21-6.

From that point on Strom Thurmond was force out of their game plan, passing on most downs. The defense, not having much concern with the run, put continuous pressure on the quarterback and the Rebels never really threatened the rest of the game. Spencer Benton added a 26 yard field goal in the fourth quarter taking the Hawks to 24-6.

Trying to eat up as much clock as possible the offense kept to the ground but Evan Rose broke through the line and hurdled number 4 for the Rebels for a 27 yard romp to the end zone. The PAT was blocked leaving the final score Myrtle Beach 30 Strom Thurmond 6.

Next week the Seahawks will travel to Timberland who defeated Darlington 20-0.

Lower State Playoff Brackets

Here is how the road to the lower state looks now. The TD was set up by two long downfield passes from Ellis to Eddie Jones.

The Cougars came as close as they could when they intercepted a screen pass and returned the ball 60 yards to make the score 7-6. The two point conversion attempt was stuffed and the game quickly fell into the expected pattern of defensive stops and offensive yardage.

The Hawks score next on a Ellis to Damien Singleton pass that covered 40 yards. The Hawks took a 14-6 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Hawks kicked off in the second half. On their first possession North Charleston fumbled and Evan Rose recovered. Mitch Melton came in at QB and combined a couple of keepers and some handoffs to move the ball quickly to the one yard line. On fourth and goal Evan Rose dove over the goal line to put Myrtle Beach up 21-6.

In the fourth quarter a Ellis pass to Mac Sanders set up a first and goal at the two. Rose again dove over the line to increase that Hawk's lead 28-6. The rest of the game the Hawks worked on the clock and the defense held off all North Charleston threats to seal the first round playoff victory, and set up a rematch with Strom Thurmond who defeated Lake City 17-6.

The Hawks travel to a dangerous Strom Thurmond team with hopes of avenging last years third round playoff loss.

Myrtle Beach 35 Socastee 19

A rainy homecoming. The Seahawks need a homecoming win over Socastee and a Carolina Forest upset of North Myrtle Beach to really cloud up the region championship picture. But as it stands right now Myrtle Beach is a likely number 2 in region 6.

The brackets for the state playoffs can be found here. It looks likely that Myrtle Beach will face North Charleston (7-2) at Doug Shaw Stadium in the first round of the playoffs. St. James will travel to Timberland(8-1), Georgetown will travel to Hilton Head(7-2), and North Myrtle Beach will host Bluffton (5-4). At least that's my brackets.

After that it looks like another trip to Strom Thurmond. The Seahawks did manage a second quarter TD on a Mitch Melton QB keeper that was set up by a Drew Ellis to Austin Wakefield pass that left the ball on the one yard line.

Myrtle Beach received the opening kick off in the second half and marched down the field to make it a 13-0 game when Spencer Benton missed the PAT.

Carolina Forest started on their 20 after another kick off landed in the endzone. Demazio Skelton then intercepted a Panther pass and ran untouched to the end zone. Bruce Taylor carried a Panther defender over the goal line for the two point conversion and the Hawks led by a score of 21-0.

On the next Panther possession a fourth and long brought in the punt team. The snap sailed over the punters head, he recovered the ball and managed about a 20 yard kick that was caught by Evan Rose and returned 30 yards for another Seahawk score.

Damien Singleton and Reese Grandison scored TDs, Wesley Conrad scored when he recovered a Melton fumble in the end zone, and James Sumter scored in the waning minutes on a 70 yard run.

It was a good win for the Hawks but with North Myrtle Beach beating Georgetown 28 - 24, it means Myrtle Beach will likely finish 2nd in the region. Next week is Homecoming against Socastee, see you at the game.

Myrtle Beach 51 St. James 7

The Sharks and their coach Billy Hurston came up short tonight in their quest to prove that they have achieved parity in region play. The Seahawks scored early and scored often in a lopsided victory.

The running game we heard so much about in the Sun News the last couple of weeks proved to be the not ready for prime time players. While Myrtle Beach combined a strong passing game with some real power running from Evan Rose who score three TD's behind the blocking of Bruce Taylor. I heard one fan say as Rose and Taylor lined up in the backfield "Here comes the train! The steam locomotive is ready to roll."

The Hawk's first offensive possession moved the ball quickly down the field , but an intercepted pass resulted in St. James having the ball on the eight yardline of the Hawks with first and goal. After a couple of stops and a holding penalty against the sharks it turned into fourth and goal at the 40 and a St. James punt.

The Hawks took over and moved quickly downfield but bogged down on the 35 of the Sharks. Spencer Benton kicked a 44 yard field goal to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The scoring was fast paced after that. I believe Damien Singleton, Mac Sanders, and Mitch Melton all had TD's. St. James did put together a good drive at the beginning of the second half and you have to credit Skyler Brown the Shark's QB and Safety for a good game but Hurston and company still came up short again.

Myrtle Beach 21 Georgetown 18

On a blustery night the Seahawks put together some strong drives behind the running of Evan Rose to defeat the Bulldog of Georgetown in an important region match up.

The Hawks scored first after a tipped pass was intercepted by Eddie Jones who returned the ball to the Georgetown 25. A few plays later Mitch Melton went in on a Quarterback keeper to put the Hawks up 7-0 and they never trailed. Georgetown managed a field goal early in the second quarter to make it 7-3.

The Hawks didn't throw he ball down the field much in the first half. Andrew Ellis connected on 9 of 12 passes for a total of 60 yards, but 25 of those yards came on a completion to Damian Singleton that resulted in another Seahawk touchdown to make the score MB 14 G'town 3.

Damian gets more impressive with each outing. It is easy to see why Division 1 colleges are so interested in him. He has good speed, great hands, and unbelievable vertical height. One pass completed to Damian tonight was thrown into double coverage but neither defender came close to the ball as Damian leapt at least a foot higher than either of them.

The Dog's were tough though and when you would think half time was here a Georgetown back made a great cut through the line and broke free in the secondary scoring a Georgetown TD that made the halftime score 14-10.

The Seahawk defense looked much better in this game. They kept bending, but refused to break and came up with some big plays at key times in the game. Near the end of the third quarter Georgetown drove the ball to the Myrtle Beach 25 and on fourth down kicked a field goal to draw within 1 of the Hawks. A roughing the kicker call on the play was accepted by the Bulldogs, taking the points off the board and giving them first and goal inside the 10 yard line. But Kyle Fife came up with a big interception one yard deep in the end zone and returned the ball 101 yards for a Myrtle Beach touchdown making the score 21-10 Myrtle Beach. I didn't know Kyle had such speed but he out ran all eleven of the Bulldog defenders on that one.

The Myrtle Beach defense kept Georgetown on their heels but the pesky Dogs would not go away. With help from some silly penalties like illegal participation on a punt that gave Georgetown new life with a first down the Bulldogs put up another TD early in he fourth quarter and made a successful two point conversion to draw within 3 of the Seahawks at 21-18.

The two teams traded punts and field position until with 4 minutes in the game Georgetown got the ball at their own twenty after a missed field goal attempt by Spencer Benton. They drove the ball behind the running of Reggie Shackleford to the Myrtle Beach 29. The Hawk defense then made some great stops to force a field goal attempt on fourth and long. Coach Early called a time out to ice the kicker or maybe to wait for the wind to kick back up as it was blowing into the face of the Georgetown kicker. It did not matter. Eddie Jones came in from the right side of the defensive line to block the kick and assure the Seahawks of their first region win.

With North Myrtle Beach Losing to St. James 13 to 14 tonight the race for the region championship is still up for grabs. Next week the Seahawks travel to St. James to continue their quest. Good luck Hawks.

Myrtle Beach 14 NMB 28

Not much other way to put it the Seahawks got whupped by a, at least on this night, much better North Myrtle Beach team.

The Chiefs started the game with a long sustained drive that cover 80 yards, resulting in a TD and successful PAT, to go up 7-0 They mixed a strong running game with some timely passes to deliver a ball control offence that dominated the Seahawks. On the next Seahawk possession the Chief's defense came up with a stop and then blocked a Spencer Benton punt to set up their offence with a short field. Once again the Chiefs and Kendall Keel drove the ball to another score and PAT to put North Myrtle Beach up 14-0.

In the second quarter it looked like the Hawks would finally find some offensive punch. Using some unusual formations, the line lining up wide like a PAT are you asleep formation, and a six wideout three to a side, the Hawks moved quickly down the field. Stopped on a third and long the Hawks lined up for a 37 yards field goal, but the kick was short giving NMB the ball on the 20.

The next Seahawk possession featured more of the odd formations and must have confused the Chief defense as Myrtle Beach moved the ball in large chunks, that resulted in a Mac Sanders reception up the middle for a Seahawk TD. The PAT was good leaving the score 14-7 at the half.

The third quarter saw both defenses playing well and little offensive progress, until somewhere along the way the Myrtle Beach secondary began playing tag football. At one point NMB running back broke through the line, was tagged by three Myrtle Beach defenders and finally caught from behind 30 yards downfield by Wesley Conrad. A defensive lineman for Pete's sake! So the Chiefs score again making the score 21-7.

The Hawks responded with the help of a face mask call, and some very good running from junior, Reese Grandison, moving the ball down the field. The drive was capped off with, what is becoming a signature play, a fade pass from Ellis to Damian Singleton. That gave the Hawks hope down only 21-14.

With seven minutes left in the game the Hawks were moving the ball again on offense when Drew Ellis, on what looked liked a draw screen, threw the ball to a NMB rusher who took the ball in for the TD that sealed the victory for the Chiefs.

Offensively Reese Grandison had some very good runs and showed a lot of heart in his effort. Defensively Evan Rose once again had a fine outing and probably led all tacklers.

Coming into tonight's game the Hawks were a confident team focused on winning the region title. It is a hard loss but let's hope the Hawks learn from their mistakes, show strong character and bounce back next week against the Bulldogs of Georgetown.

Myrtle Beach 48 Andrews 34

The Seahawks and the stadium announcer for the Andrews Yellow Jackets provided an entertaining evening on Friday. The Hawks started off in a hole after Reese Grandison fumbled the opening kickoff giving Andrews a short field. The Jackets scored a TD but the extra point attempt was missed giving Andrews a 6-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets returned the favor with a fumble on their end of the field and Andrew Ellis connected with Damian Singleton and Spencer Benton supplied the PAT to give Myrtle Beach a 7-6 lead. The lead was short lived though as another Seahawk turnover resulted in a 60+ yard run by Antwuan Gibson and the two point conversion was successful putting Andrews back on top 14-7.

The next Seahawk score came from a 37 yard field goal by Spencer. But again a tipped pass resulted in another turnover and an Andrews TD followed by another successful two point conversion to put the Hawks down by a score of 22-10. Myrtle Beach answered with another corner route jump ball to Damian and another PAT from Spencer to close the gap to 22-17.

On the Yellow Jackets final possession of the half, the Seahawk defense came up with a big stop, using his final timeout Coach Early stopped the clock with Andrews facing a fourth and long. The snap to the punter was bobbled and the kicker tackled with 4 seconds remaining on the clock when the whistle blew, but the timekeeper let the clock continue and Andrews coach Steve Hart tried to hurry his playersoff the field into the locker room. Coach Early plead his case on the field and Andrews was ordered back for one last play that resulted in another Spencer Benton field goal of about 39 yards.

In the third quarter the Myrtle Beach defense took over. If there was a player of the game it should go to the D line that continued to stack up a bigger Andrews front five and stymie the Yellow Jackets running game. The offense came to life in the second half also, finally running north - south instead of sideline to sideline, and throwing the ball down the field instead of short swings behind the line of scrimmage. Reese Grandison converted a Drew Ellis pass into a touchdown that covered 50 yards putting Myrtle Beach up 27-22 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The straw that broke the Jackets back came when on a fourth and long, the snap sailed over the punters head into the Jackets end zone where speedy Eddie "Super Mario" Jones fell on it for a Myrtle Beach touchdown putting the Hawks up 34-22.

In the fourth quarter Ellis delivered his best pass of the night to Tyler Wakefield on a post pattern that split two defenders and resulted in another Seahawk TD making it 41-22. The final Seahawk score came when the Hawks were trying to kill the clock, almost by accident, as a third and long that required a pass to maintain possession, resulted in Eddie Jones scoring yet again.

With the game well in hand at 48-22 Myrtle Beach went to the bench to get some game experience for the younger players. Andrews managed two more meaningless scores to make the final 48-34 Myrtle Beach.

With region play kicking off next week against North Myrtle Beach the Hawks must learn to reduce their turnovers. Four first half turnovers resulted in three Andrews TD's. Our offence needs to move North - South rather than East - West, and Drew needs to look to spread the ball around more, his choice of receivers is becoming too predictable.

Myrtle Beach 14 Lake City 12

The Seahawks overcame all 15 members of the Lake City Panther team to earn their third win of the season.

On Lake City's first possession the Hawk defense forced a turnover that gave Myrtle Beach the ball deep in Panther territory and the offence managed a twenty yard drive to put the Seahawks up by a score of 7-0.

Lake City answered with a long drive of their own to bring the score to 7-6 as their two point attempt was stopped short of the goal.

The Panthers managed another score late in the second quarter with a big assist from the officiating crew. With fourth and long on the Myrtle Beach 25 the Panthers lined up for an obvious fake field goal attempt and had men running on and off the field prior to the snap, multiple men in motion including the holder, but Myrtle Beach was called for hitting the center, which is a penalty for a long snap, but I'm not so sure about a fake when the snap goes to the kicker who becomes the QB. Anyway with all the motion the play should have been ruled dead before the snap, but Lake City was awarded a first and ten at the 11. The defense stiffened but when it was third and short on the three the refs decided to award the Panthers a first and goal without a measurement. The Panthers ended up scoring, but once again the two point conversion effort was stopped to give Lake City a 12=6 halftime lead.

The offensive standout of the game was running back Damian Singleton who had another stellar performance for a player with so little experience. The passing game was off tonight so Damian and Reese had to grind out most of the Hawk's yardage on the ground. By the end of the third quarter Myrtle Beach had taken back the lead by a score of 14-12.

With about 4 minutes remaining in the game the Panthers got the ball at their own 35 and that is when things got really crazy. The Hawks held L.C. to a third and long but as the third down pass fell incomplete a flag for roughing the passer moved the ball forward fifteen yards and another L.C. first down.

Stopped once again by the Hawk's a Lake City fourth and 10 pass was a jump ball knocked down by the Seahawk's secondary, but once again a yellow flag fluttered to the ground and Lake City had new life on a pass interference call.

The Panthers once again were in effective, but you guessed it another flag flew to save the day for Lake City. Finally with the ball on the Seahawk 15 the Panthers tried for a field goal that barely cleared the line and the officials were probably too embarrassed to penalize the Seahawk's for celebrating too much.

I hope the high school league gets to review the game film for this crew. But still kudos to the Hawks on a win against all odds.

Myrtle Beach Beats Dillon...Again! 24 to 14

Myrtle Beach beat Dillon 24 - 14 for the second time in as many years.

Dillon's first snap from center was fumbled then recovered by the Seahawks. The ensuing drive led to a Spencer Benton 31 yard field goal to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead and set the pace for the rest of the game.

Although Dillon scored two touchdowns in the first half, a late pass to Mac Sanders resulted in a Seahawk touchdown that brought the score to 14-10 Dillon at the end of the first half.

In the second half the Seahawk Defense played smash mouth football. It will be interesting to see the stats, I don't recall Dillon having many first downs in the second half.

The play of the game though came late in the fourth quarter. With the Seahawks up by 3 and a fourth and long near midfield the Seahawk coaches called a fake punt that caught everyone and especially Dillon by surprise. The snap went to the up man Mitch Melton, while Spencer faked a high snap then rolled to the right. Mitch lofted a perfect pass back to Spencer, who, with two blockers in front of him ran the ball in for a touchdown that drove a stake into the heart of the Dillon team, coaches, and fans. Coach Early could be seen on the sidelines pumping his fist and looking across the field at coach Hayes. Maybe he was recalling coach Hayes comment after Dillon's loss last year that we "obviously aren't used to winning the big game". Ha! Take that back to Dillon county Coach Hayes.

link to Sun News article

JV Wins Against West Brunswick

The JV Seahawks took a victory against the West Brunswick Trojans on Wednesday in a game that was moved up due to tropical storm Ernesto. On their first play from scrimmage the Trojans ran 82 yards for their lone score.

The Seahawk defense settled in from that point on not allowing the Trojans to threaten for the rest of the game, and scoring a safety when they sacked the Trojan QB in the final quarter.

The game lasted over 2 1/2 hours as the zebra crew went on a flag tossing frenzy, even penalizing MB for players standing too close to the field. With the temperament coach Early is known for I am sure they paid a price for their over active yellow flagging.

The Hawks played well on defense despite not having the services of Big Bruce Taylor at middle linebacker spot. Evan Rose once again made some hard hits and Mac Smith moved in at outside linebacker to fill out the defense.

The Wakefield twins both had solid nights at receiver and Drew Ellis managed enough forward yardage to get the job done in spite of all the penalties.

Injury Report

The Sun News reported this morning that Mario underwent a MRI for a knee injury, and Bruce Taylor broke a bone in his arm during the Conway game.

We wish both of these Seahawks a speedy recovery.

JV Football Conway 14 Myrtle Beach 13 - OT

The JV football team lost a close one in Conway on Thursday afternoon. A questionable pass interference call gave the Tigers a first down near mid field with about three minutes remaining, and they managed to score the winning touchdown with 28 seconds remaining on the clock.

Defensively the Hawks were awesome most of the game, swarming to the Conway running backs and playing Division I scholarship recipient, Junior Hemingway, with a high low double team that made him ineffective for most of the game. Linebacker Evan Rose had a stellar outing making some key tackles, and an intersection that led to a Seahawk field goal in the fourth quarter.

Spencer Benton provided much of the offensive excitement hitting a twenty yard field goal in the second quarter to give Myrtle Beach the lead going into halftime, and boomed a forty-nine yard three pointer in the fourth quarter that brought the crowd to their feet.

On offence the Hawks were effective in moving the ball most of the night, but penalties usually stalled each drive.

2006 Football Schedule

08/25/2006 Conway Home
09/01/2006 West Brunswick (NC) Away
09/08/2006 Dillon Home
09/15/2006 Lake City Away
09/22/2006 Andrews Away
09/29/2006 North Myrtle Beach Home
10/06/2006 Georgetown Home
10/13/2006 St. James Away
10/20/2006 Carolina Forest Away
10/27/2006 Socastee Home

Kickoff Classic

The Seahawks looked impressive in their Conway National Bank Kickoff Classic win over Carvers Bay. Drew Ellis connected with Eddie "Super Mario" Jones for two TD's and receiver Tyler Wakefield for another.

The defense had a couple of hickups against the strong Carvers Bay running game, but looked pretty solid considering that Division 1 prospect Bruce Taylor was sidelined with a shoulder injury, and defensive lineman Albert Brown was missing also.

Conway tied North Myrtle Beach in their matchup, giving hope that the Seahawks have a chance to win the bell in next weeks opening game against the perennially strong AAAA Tigers.

Kickoff Banquet Tickets Now On Sale

Tickets for the 2006 Kickoff banquet are now available from booster club board members.
