Myrtle Beach 30 Strom Thurmond 6

The Myrtle Beach Seahawks made the long trip to Strom Thurmond Friday night but after avenging last years third round loss to the Rebels the trip home seemed much shorter.

The Hawks started off shakily. Strom Thurmond received the opening kick off and reeled off a series of long runs to quickly move the ball to the Myrtle Beach 25. Coach Early called a time out and I don't know if he reminded the Seahawks of things they had seen in films, pointed out what assignments were being missed, or threatened the lives of the defensive unit, but the Hawks stiffened and held for three consecutive plays forcing the Rebels to settle for a 36 yard field goal.

On offence the Hawks were ineffective, going three and out on their first three possessions. We saw more of the old throw the ball sideways or backwards, some new plays that were ill conceived, and running east-west. Against competition that only gets tougher each week the offensive coordinators need to learn how to step it up. We can't wait until the second quarter to start playing football if we want a chance to visit Williams Brice Stadium this year. The Hawks need to learn to come out swinging with their best punches, not shadow boxing with themselves.

The Rebels however kept up a relentless ground game that resulted in another field goal and a missed field goal in the same span. You do have to like the way the defense stiffened when the Rebels reached the red zone. Strom Thurmond led 6-0 before the Hawks managed their first first down. Another Seahawk punt then resulted in another missed field goal try from 46 yards.

When the Seahawks finally began to move North-South they were very effective and early in the second quarter Drew Ellis connected with Damien Singleton deep down the sideline, resulting in a 40 yard TD and a Seahawk lead that they never relinquished. Spencer Benton added the PAT and the Hawks led 7-0 at the half.

The second half saw the Hawks first drive stall around the 40. But the defense was ready to play and stopped the Rebels. Myrtle Beach then marched down the field and quickly scored to make it 14-0 on a plunge over the line by Evan Rose.

On the next Myrtle Beach possession the Hawks drove efficiently down the field, but with first and goal on the seven, and a chance to put the game away the coaches opted not to use the power running of Evan Rose and company, instead choosing a finesse pass to the back of the end zone that was intercepted.

But just when the Rebels felt they might have new life and a chance, Evan Rose stepped in to intercept a Hillary pass and return the ball 24 yards to make the score 21-6.

From that point on Strom Thurmond was force out of their game plan, passing on most downs. The defense, not having much concern with the run, put continuous pressure on the quarterback and the Rebels never really threatened the rest of the game. Spencer Benton added a 26 yard field goal in the fourth quarter taking the Hawks to 24-6.

Trying to eat up as much clock as possible the offense kept to the ground but Evan Rose broke through the line and hurdled number 4 for the Rebels for a 27 yard romp to the end zone. The PAT was blocked leaving the final score Myrtle Beach 30 Strom Thurmond 6.

Next week the Seahawks will travel to Timberland who defeated Darlington 20-0.

Myrtle Beach 28 North Charleston 6

It was a cold night at Doug Shaw memorial Stadium, but the Seahawks heated it up on offence and the Myrtle Beach defense allowed no scoring in this first round play off game.

The Hawks struck first with a strike from Drew Ellis to Tyler Wakefield to take a 7-0 first quarter lead. The TD was set up by two long downfield passes from Ellis to Eddie Jones.

The Cougars came as close as they could when they intercepted a screen pass and returned the ball 60 yards to make the score 7-6. The two point conversion attempt was stuffed and the game quickly fell into the expected pattern of defensive stops and offensive yardage.

The Hawks score next on a Ellis to Damien Singleton pass that covered 40 yards. The Hawks took a 14-6 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Hawks kicked off in the second half. On their first possession North Charleston fumbled and Evan Rose recovered. Mitch Melton came in at QB and combined a couple of keepers and some handoffs to move the ball quickly to the one yard line. On fourth and goal Evan Rose dove over the goal line to put Myrtle Beach up 21-6.

In the fourth quarter a Ellis pass to Mac Sanders set up a first and goal at the two. Rose again dove over the line to increase that Hawk's lead 28-6. The rest of the game the Hawks worked on the clock and the defense held off all North Charleston threats to seal the first round playoff victory, and set up a rematch with Strom Thurmond who defeated Lake City 17-6.

The Hawks travel to a dangerous Strom Thurmond team with hopes of avenging last years third round playoff loss.

Myrtle Beach 35 Socastee 19

A rainy homecoming. The Hawks won again. Evan Rose powered in four TD's and Dre Ellis connected with Damien Singleton in the endzone for 35 points.

Carolina Forest lost to NMB so the Seahawks finish second in region play. The playoffs start next Friday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Playoff Pairings

The season is not over yet. The Seahawks need a homecoming win over Socastee and a Carolina Forest upset of North Myrtle Beach to really cloud up the region championship picture. But as it stands right now Myrtle Beach is a likely number 2 in region 6.

The brackets for the state playoffs can be found here. It looks likely that Myrtle Beach will face North Charleston (7-2) at Doug Shaw Stadium in the first round of the playoffs. St. James will travel to Timberland(8-1), Georgetown will travel to Hilton Head(7-2), and North Myrtle Beach will host Bluffton (5-4). At least that's my brackets.

After that it looks like another trip to Strom Thurmond. Go Hawks!

Myrtle Beach 54 Carolina Forest 0

Another blowout victory for the Hawks. A game that started slow with Myrtle Beach shooting themselves in the foot with penalties early on. The Seahawks did manage a second quarter TD on a Mitch Melton QB keeper that was set up by a Drew Ellis to Austin Wakefield pass that left the ball on the one yard line.

Myrtle Beach received the opening kick off in the second half and marched down the field to make it a 13-0 game when Spencer Benton missed the PAT.

Carolina Forest started on their 20 after another kick off landed in the endzone. Demazio Skelton then intercepted a Panther pass and ran untouched to the end zone. Bruce Taylor carried a Panther defender over the goal line for the two point conversion and the Hawks led by a score of 21-0.

On the next Panther possession a fourth and long brought in the punt team. The snap sailed over the punters head, he recovered the ball and managed about a 20 yard kick that was caught by Evan Rose and returned 30 yards for another Seahawk score.

Damien Singleton
and Reese Grandison scored TDs, Wesley Conrad scored when he recovered a Melton fumble in the end zone, and James Sumter scored in the waning minutes on a 70 yard run.

It was a good win for the Hawks but with North Myrtle Beach beating Georgetown 28 - 24, it means Myrtle Beach will likely finish 2nd in the region. Next week is Homecoming against Socastee, see you at the game.
